What's The Deal With These Cruise Prices?

Here you are. You have some vacation time from work. Yes, some very well earned vacation time indeed. Of course you do not want to just sit around the house. I mean, it is an escape and all, but those wall eventually start closing in on you. So you want to do something, but you don't want to just do any old thing.

You are considering a Cruise, perhaps a Carnival Cruise, maybe Royal Caribbean, or Princess. Yes,
that is going to be it, you are going to do a cruise. That's what you want to do. You hear about this awesome special, a Seven Night Western Caribbean cruise visiting Haiti, Cozumel and Jamaica. What a deal, only $350 for an interior cabin. You are ready to do this. You contact your Travel Agent or go online to book the cruise, give them or enter YOUR information, and suddenly, Sticker Shock!!! The cost of the cruise jumped to $700. Holy Bait and Switch Batman! The commercial said this, and you were told that. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Oscar. Who is lying here? The print ad, or the travel agent?  $700 is a 100% mark-up from the price quoted by the print ad. So, what really happened here?

Let's take another look at that print ad. Yup, Seven Day Western Caribbean Experience. Uh Huh, $350. What is the problem? Hey, what is this? Some fine print at the bottom of the AD. Has something to do with the asterisks next to the cruise price. The fine print reads "Prices are based on Double Occupancy". What the heck is Double Occupancy?

Double Occupancy assumes more than one person will be in the cabin during the cruise. Husband & Wife, Boyfriend and Girlfriend, Two FRAT Brothers, Two Sorority Sisters, Two family members, etc. So what does this have to do with the cost of the cabin, and the price posted on the AD?

Well, the price of the Cabin does not change. Honestly, the actual cost of the Cabin is $700. That is the price established by the cruise line. The occupancy factor shares the cost of the cabin among all occupants of the cabin. Think of it like this:

How is that? A little clearer? So, what does this means to our solo traveler who still wants to take that cruise for vacation? Well that is where having a travel agent like IrSabio Travel can help.
